Vintage, Mahjong Set: 152 Creamy-White American Beauty Tiles, New Embroidered Box, Rack Bag, 4 Racks and Dice.

Set Description:
. Pair of contemporary. The design is butterflies and flowers. Green, blue and red on white. Dice are hand painted. The design is a spin-off of the dice in my Mother Nature mahjong set. Measurement: Approximately 3/4-inch square.
. Vintage, 80 square hole coins. 20 each of red, blue, green and yellow. Measurement 7/8-inch diameter.
. Vintage, Catalin swirl racks with pumpkin stoppers and brass tone coin holders. There is one each of purple, yellow, green and teal. All racks have pumpkin stoppers. The racks are in nice vintage condition with a few various marks and expected wear. No chips or cracks. The coin holders have some pitting. Measurement: approximately 18 inches long, 15-1/2 inches playing field.
. New rack bag, designed and made by Em Chisholm of The Pickled Poet. Tree of Life print on a cotton fabric in shades of pink, yellow, gold, red, green, purple, orange and black on a light white-ivory background. The top ruffle is blue, the bag is also lined in blue. The drawstrings are finished with a handmade painted bead and seven-coin tassel on each drawstring. The drawstring is gold, coins are gold and beads are gold. Measurement: approximately 26 x 7-1/2 inches.
. New, navy blue box with embroidered lid by Rifle Paper Co. Fabric covered box embroidered with their Strawberry Fields floral design in shades of green, blue, red, pink and gold. There is a ribbon tab and magnetic closure, their logo is on the inside lid in gold foil. Measurement 9-1/4 L x 6-7/8 W x 3-1/2 H inches.
. 152, circa 1965s Alite tiles sold under the American Beauty label, manufactured by A. and L. Manufacturing Co. These tiles are in very nice condition. The tiles are creamy-white, there is a color variation within the tile set, this is natural to the set. The paint is in very nice condition. There are a few tiles with tiny little nicks. There are six natural joker tiles, two extra flower tiles have been stickered as jokers. There are some random marks. In the photos of the complete tile set, the tiles have been turned over in place. Measurement: Approximately 1-1/4 x 7/8 x 1/2 inches.

This is a "Vintage" mahjong set. It was not manufactured utilizing modern technology with precision controls and exact results. Pieces and parts were in many cases made by hand, up to 90 years ago. There may be some variation in color and/or size as well as manufacturing artifacts or remnants such as surface cracking, scratches or flea bites in the Catalin, Bakelite, resin, Celluloid, Lucite, or other plastics as the material cooled. Chips and flea bites may be a result of materials used as fillers in the plastics or how the set was played with or stored. There may also be variation in the paint colors from suit to suit if the set tiles were painted at different times using different batches of paint.

Some tiles are made from more than one type of materials. Some of the pieces of a tile may shrink differently than others and over time the tile components may separate. Game tiles may also separate during normal play. If the pieces separate, a simple tacky, water clean-up, crafter's glue will work nicely to reattach the pieces. On rare occasion, pieces may separate during shipping. If the set arrives with separated tiles they can be easily repaired as outlined above. Please get in touch with me and I will work with you to resolve the situation to your 100% satisfaction. Separated tiles are not in and of themselves reason to return a set as the repair is both simple and quick.

The wood, bone and bamboo pieces may not all match perfectly in size, as most were carved, crafted and assembled by hand. This also includes the wooden storage boxes. In an effort to get the product to market quickly, many of the vintage wooden boxes were made with green wood. As the wood dried, it may have split, shrunk or cracked in places. This is what makes the sets vintage and unique and brings the wonderful character and charm that makes mahjong sets so very popular. Vintage sets are unique in that they bear the maker's personal touch.

Vintage metal will show its age and character. The money holders, case locks and other metal components may have an uneven patina, spots of oxidation or normal use wear associated with age. Additionally, if dissimilar metals were used to make the parts, there will be areas of galvanic corrosion where the two metal types are joined.

If you are expecting that all of the pieces match in size and color exactly then you probably do not want a vintage set. Please look carefully at my photographs, read my description carefully, and ask questions before bidding or purchasing. Additional information regarding vintage mahjong sets can be found online.
