Vintage, 154 Tiles, Eastern Distributors, Catalin Mahjong Set with 4 Catalin Racks in Case.

Set Description:

. Pair of vintage Catalin dice with black pips. modern, Measurement: Approximately 9/16-inch square.

. 48 square hole, vintage coins. Twelve each of red, green, white and blue. Measurement, 7/8-inch diameter.

. 4, vintage, Catalin, swirl racks with swirl stoppers, brass tone coin holders, circa 1950s. These racks are thick and heavy. The four racks are different colors, one each of: yellow and cream swirl with burgundy swirl stopper, teal swirl with burgundy swirl stopper, green swirl with golden swirl stopper and red swirl with golden swirl stopper. They are in overall nice condition with expected wear from normal play. The coin stoppers and holders have oxidation with some brass plating missing. All flippies are tight. Rack measurement, approximately 18-1/4 inches, with 15-5/8 inches playing field.

. Vintage vinyl case with a red faux alligator print. The case has two trays. Newly lined case lid in a cotton print in shades of burgundy, peach, gold, blue, white, green and black. The trays are also in red faux alligator print. The interior of the case and trays are solid red vinyl. The outside of the case has some wear, thinning vinyl, these areas have been touched up, the case also has some spots including small paint spatters. Brass-plated hardware, most of it is pitted. Heavy black plastic handle. Measurement approximately: 19-3/4 x 9 x 3-1/4 inches.

. 154 vintage, Eastern Distributors, Catalin mahjong tiles. These tiles are early, most likely from the 1920s. They are pumpkin in color. Beautifully styled tiles featuring a lovely flowers tiles including one with an image that is horizontal. Paint is in nice condition, with very little missing. These tiles have been played with, and there are various marks on some tiles including expected wear from normal play. Some of the tiles have a little discoloration in the Catalin, a few tiles have random marks. There are two tiles that are slightly misshaped on one corner (please see image). One hundred forty-six tiles are original to the set; eight, well matched added orphan tiles have been stickers as joker tiles. In the photos of the complete tile set, the tiles have been turned over and on their sides in place. This set has been cleaned by hand. Tile measurement approximately: 1-7/32 x 7/8 x 7/16 inches.

This is a "Vintage" mahjong set. It was not manufactured utilizing modern technology with precision controls and exact results. Pieces and parts were in many cases made by hand, up to 90 years ago. There may be some variation in color and/or size as well as manufacturing artifacts or remnants such as surface cracking, scratches or flea bites in the Catalin, Bakelite, resin, Celluloid, Lucite, or other plastics as the material cooled. Chips and flea bites may be a result of materials used as fillers in the plastics or how the set was played with or stored. There may also be variation in the paint colors from suit to suit if the set tiles were painted at different times using different batches of paint.

Some tiles are made from more than one type of materials. Some of the pieces of a tile may shrink differently than others and over time the tile components may separate. Game tiles may also separate during normal play. If the pieces separate, a simple tacky, water clean-up, crafter's glue will work nicely to reattach the pieces. On rare occasion, pieces may separate during shipping. If the set arrives with separated tiles they can be easily repaired as outlined above. Please get in touch with me and I will work with you to resolve the situation to your 100% satisfaction. Separated tiles are not in and of themselves reason to return a set as the repair is both simple and quick.

The wood, bone and bamboo pieces may not all match perfectly in size, as most were carved, crafted and assembled by hand. This also includes the wooden storage boxes. In an effort to get the product to market quickly, many of the vintage wooden boxes were made with green wood. As the wood dried, it may have split, shrunk or cracked in places. This is what makes the sets vintage and unique and brings the wonderful character and charm that makes mahjong sets so very popular. Vintage sets are unique in that they bear the maker's personal touch.

Vintage metal will show its age and character. The money holders, case locks and other metal components may have an uneven patina, spots of oxidation or normal use wear associated with age. Additionally, if dissimilar metals were used to make the parts, there will be areas of galvanic corrosion where the two metal types are joined.

If you are expecting that all of the pieces match in size and color exactly then you probably do not want a vintage set. Please look carefully at my photographs, read my description carefully, and ask questions before bidding or purchasing. Additional information regarding vintage mahjong sets can be found online.
